The Nucleus Hotel, a three-story hotel located on South Second Street between Santa Clara and San Fernando Streets, Downtown, San Jose, CA. It was opened in 1889 in the Haynes Building. It operated under that name until about 1894 when it became the Bristol Hotel, having expanded into the two-story buildings to the south. The hotel became notorious as a house of prostitution in 1915 and was closed by 1916. The name then changed to the Hotel San Carlos in 1917, remaining under that name until it burned in the early 1991. The architectural integrity of the building was compromised in the 1950s when the building was remodeled in the International style, stripped of all its Victorian architectural details.
